What is a Bone X-ray?

Bone x-ray is performed to get images of any bone in any part of the body. This determines the problems in a bone at a very basic level making it the fastest way of diagnosing the issue.

 

Why have I been asked to get a Bone x-ray done?

Bone  x-ray is performed to:
  • Determine the reason for any bone pain.
  • Check up for any fractures in a bone.
  • Determine any bone dislocation or injury
  • Guide orthopaedic surgery such as spine repair/fusion, joint replacement and fracture reductions.
  • Assess any bone cancer
  • Detect abnormal bone growths, infection, arthritis
  • Detecting unknown objects in soft tissues around or in bones.

  • Total time – 1 hr 
  • Test time- 10-15 mins

 

Can I walk in for a Bone x-ray without prior appointment?

. How can I prepare for the scan?

  • Women should tell their doctors if there is any chance they may be pregnant because x-ray radiation can harm the baby. If in doubt, make sure to take a pregnancy test before performing the scan. If positive, consult your doctor.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and avoid jewellery or any other metal on the body.
  • inform if you have an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted for pregnancy prevention.

 

How is the Bone x-ray done?

  • You  will be asked to lie/sit on a padded table or stand depending on the bones to be assessed.
  •  It’s important that you  stay very still.  You may be asked to hold your  breath for a few seconds during the time in which the image is obtained.
  • Multiple images from different angles may be required.
